Cloth Bags
After learning that plastic bags are made from a non-renewable energy source, they never break down completely and they strangle wildlife, it's easy to see why we all need to make the change to cloth bags.
For weekly grocery shopping, you might find the best deals are the ones at Publix ($1.00 each). Whole Foods has some that are made from recycled materials and are larger and sturdier as well as some insulated ones that keep food hot or cold.
Depending on the size of your family, you'll need about 5 to 8 of these bags to do your weekly shopping. It's convenient to store them inside a larger cloth bag (Target has many to choose from) so that when you need to grab them and go, they are all together in one place.
You may want a more stylish one to take to the mall or to do other errands with. Think about how many bags you receive in a year whild shopping in your favorite retail outlets. Many of these are not recyclable and go right into the landfill. Just ask the clerk to wrap your items in tissue and place them into your cloth bag.

To help yourself remember to take them with you, store your bags in the trunk of your car so they are with you wherever you go. If you wind up inside the store without them, just walk back to your car and get them if you forget (great exercise!). After you do this a few times, you'll begin to remember more easily. Publix and Whole Foods have signs in front of the stores that will remind you, also don't be frustrated that you forget and just give up- keep trying and after a while you will remember.
Don't rely on recycling plastic bags to justify the use of them. Although recycling is better than dumping them in the landfill, it does not help the environment to keep taking new bags each week. Remember that it takes energy, dollars and oil to keep making new ones. Make the change to cloth and feel good about helping preserve the Earth for our children!
